Karen
came to the firm in 1996. She specializes in toxic torts
and transportation law. She has represented CSX Transportation,
Inc. in the defense of hundreds of occupational injury and
toxic tort claims. She has mediated and arbitrated more
than one hundred cases for CSXT. More recently, Karen has
expanded her practice to the areas of civil rights, employment,
governmental liability and professional negligence, where
she has successfully defended state agencies and employees
in employment discrimination, personal injury, wrongful
death and malpractice cases arising under federal and state
law.
Karen attended Stetson University College of Law, graduating
in 1990. She served in several elected positions of the
Student Bar Association and held a teaching fellow position
for Legal Research and Writing II. She also interned for
Thirteenth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Susan C. Bucklew,
now a United States District Judge for the Middle District
of Florida. Karen began her legal career at a law firm in
St. Petersburg, Florida, where she specialized in automobile
insurance and premises liability defense for numerous Fortune
500 national insurance carriers and their insureds.
Karen is a member of The Florida Bar and the State Bar
of Georgia. She is admitted to practice in the United States
District Courts for the Northern and Middle Districts of
Georgia, the United States District Court for the Middle
District of Florida and the United States Court of Appeals
for the Eleventh Circuit.
Karen was born in Salisbury, North Carolina on August 12,
1966. She graduated from the University of South Florida,
receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology in 1987.
As an undergraduate, Karen was an active member of the American
Criminal Justice Association and its national fraternity,
Alpha Phi Sigma. During this time, Karen also attended the
Tampa Police Academy and became an auxiliary deputy for
the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, serving in this
position until after she began law school. Karen is married
to Alan.
